BIO

(b. 1965 London, Great Britain) McEwen transforms the banal into poetic interventions. His work subverts traditional utility and materiality by supplementing the expected with the witty and poignant. Through the use of familiar conventions and forms, McEwen’s work is able to invite and consequently disorient the viewer in novel ways.

McEwen attended Christ Church, Oxford for British Literature and then the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia. For over ten years he has exhibited internationally and domestically. His presence in New York is especially extensive; he has shown at many of the city’s quiessential galleries and museums, including PS 1 MoMa, New Museum, Whitney Biennale, and the Guggenheim. McEwen’s studio practice also extends into written and curatorial projects. He currently lives and works in New York City.
